Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 4/80-200 T* @ Mt. Seven Stars 七星山

2011.11.18

Today is the fourth day of digesting the annual leave in 2011, and the gloomy and drizzly weather has finally cleared up a bit. Not wanting to miss this rare opportunity, I grabbed my camera, hopped in the car, and headed straight for Yangmingshan's Xiaoyoukeng. I've always wanted to climb Seven Star Mountain, which I haven't been to in a decade, as a gift to myself before the end of the vacation.

Starting from Xiaoyoukeng, the trail begins with steep stairs. The rainy weather made the path slippery, and progress was a bit challenging. I took photos along the way while climbing. About 30 minutes before reaching the main peak of Seven Star Mountain, I could see the entire Taipei Basin. Due to the rain, Taipei City was covered in clouds and mist, with the only prominent landmark being the "Taipei 101." It seemed like a lighthouse above the sea of clouds, providing a rare and breathtaking view.

Yashica Electro 35 GT @ The Riverside Bikeway

2011.11.16

Today is the third day of my special vacation clearance, and after two consecutive days of rain, the weather has finally cleared up. After having lunch with my wife, I set out from the Zhongxiao Bridge water gate towards the Huajiang Bridge on my bicycle. Along the way, I passed through Zhongxiao Bridge, Zhongxing Bridge, Huajiang Bridge, Wanban Bridge, Huacui Bridge, Guangfu Bridge, and finally reached Huazhong Bridge before turning back to Dadaocheng. Heading north, I passed through Taipei Bridge and Chongxin Bridge before turning back towards the area around Dihua Street. It can be considered as having had some exercise.

Joining me in this cycling activity were my YASHICA Electro 35 GT and Kodak TMAX400 cameras. The YASHICA camera is a straightforward aperture-priority electronic shutter range-finder camera, and there are many discussions about it on the internet. My experience with it is that it's easy to focus, and when shooting negative film, I don't have to worry too much about exposure compensation. It's a handy camera for spontaneous shots, with its only drawback being its weight and size.

Let's play with film puzzles! Bessa R2C + Jupiter 11 4/135

I've seen photography works like this before in Japanese MOOK magazines, where they use the cropping and saving method after shooting on film (6 frames x 6 strips) to present a subject, creating an image that resembles a 36-piece puzzle.

For the following two examples, film photography enthusiasts should quickly understand the shooting process:

1. Prepare one roll of 135 film.
2. Get a 135mm-200mm telephoto lens.
3. Choose a theme, whether it's horizontal or vertical. In my examples, I used a 3x6 format, so one roll of film can capture two frames.
3. Select a shooting distance. Simulate composing the theme in a 3x6 format using 18 frames, keeping in mind that the film counting goes from right to left and from top to bottom.
4. Set the camera to manual exposure, determining the aperture and shutter speed. Try not to change settings during shooting to ensure consistent exposure across the 18 frames.
5. Start shooting formally, capturing each frame at a steady pace of 1-2 seconds each. Stay focused!

After finishing the shoot, it's time to develop the film. Remember to ask the lab not to cut the film, and cut it yourself at home to avoid accidentally cutting the wrong frame, ensuring the pieces can be arranged into a complete artwork.

Yashica AF J3 @ Lukang Folk Arts Museum

2011.9.11

It's been a long time since I last used a film camera. I recently purchased a budget-friendly point-and-shoot camera, the Yashica AF J3, from an online auction. Equipped with Fujifilm RDPIII slide film, I decided to test the camera's functionality during my trip to Lukang. Fortunately, the camera's exposure turned out to be quite accurate, capturing vibrant colors of the historical landmarks in Lukang Folk Arts Museum. However, there are drawbacks; the camera's fixed 33mm lens exhibits noticeable distortion at the edges of the images and occasional focus issues.

This camera boasts a unique feature called N.A. Scope, with N.A. standing for New Angle. Essentially, it's a waist-level viewfinder, particularly useful for low-angle shooting scenes. In the era of film cameras, especially point-and-shoots, the idea of having a digital camera with a flip-out screen supporting various angles for composition was unimaginable. Yashica later incorporated this viewfinder into almost all the models in the T series of point-and-shoot cameras, with the Yashica T3 Super being the most renowned.

Apart from delicious local snacks, Lukang is home to must-visit historical sites such as Lungshan Temple, Mazu Temple, and the Folk Arts Museum. The museum's exhibition halls are pleasantly air-conditioned, likely for artifact preservation, making it tempting to leave a jacket behind. Both the exterior and interior of the museum are well-maintained, making it a worthwhile destination for enthusiasts of architectural photography, offering a place to savor and appreciate in detail

N.A. Scope,N.A.
