Tripod Socket Replacement of Hasselblad SWC (Older Version)

2026/7/11

In May of this year, I acquired a Hasselblad SWC (the original version, rather than the later SWC/M). The first thing I noticed when I received the camera was that its tripod socket was only about half its original length.

After doing some research online, I learned the reason behind this modification. On the original SWC, the clearance between the tripod socket and the camera body is too small. When a CFV digital back is installed, the battery compartment of the digital back interferes with the rear half of the socket, preventing the CFV back from being mounted on the camera.

To solve this problem, it has become a fairly common modification to cut away the rear half of the socket, creating enough clearance for the CFV digital back. On my camera, the rear portion of the socket has been removed with a very clean, precise cut, suggesting that the modification was carried out by a professional.

Since I don't have any plans to use a CFV digital back, I decided to restore the camera to its original configuration by replacing the modified half-length tripod socket with an original Hasselblad part. After searching through several online auction sites, I finally managed to find and purchase a brand-new original tripod socket on eBay.

The next step was to figure out how to replace the tripod socket. During my research, I found two documents that served as useful references:

Repair Manual for Hasselblad 500C, 500C/M and Super Wide C
https://phsc.ca/repair/Hasselblad/hasselblad_camera_500C.pdf

Service Manual Hasselblad SWC903
https://repaircameras.org/files/hasselblad/hasselblad-903swc-service-manual.pdf

On the later SWC/M, the tripod socket is externally mounted and slightly raised above the camera body. This design makes it much easier to accommodate a digital back, as the socket can be removed or replaced with a redesigned third-party quick-release plate if necessary. The earlier SWC, however, uses a much less accessible design. To replace the tripod socket, the camera body must first be opened. Then, three major components must be removed: the film advance lever, the circular shutter-cocking mechanism, and the lens assembly. Only after these parts have been taken out can you access the three screws inside the body that secure the tripod socket.

After installing the new tripod socket, simply reassemble the camera by reversing the disassembly steps. Reinstall the lens assembly, the circular shutter-cocking mechanism, and the film advance lever, and the replacement is complete.

Test Shots of Instax NONS Back for Hasselblad 500cm

2024/08/18

Since Fuji discontinued the peel-apart film compatible with Polaroid instant film backs, my Hasselblad 500cm has been limited to shooting traditional film for quite some time. Over the past decade, there have been several attempts to develop instant film backs that use Fuji Instax Film, but some failed to reach their funding goals, while others experienced delayed development and came out with numerous issues. After waiting for so long, I'm finally thrilled to see NONS Camera released a commercial-grade Instax Film back. Although it still has a few minor flaws, I'm so grateful that my four Carl Zeiss lenses can now be used again.

Hasselblad 500c and four Zeiss Lenses . . : Go Go GO! @ Taipei Water Museum

Today I'm going to share about this group of Grandpa-level medium-format cameras. I got hold of this 500c probably before 2009, but it wasn't my first Hasselblad set. My first set should have been around 2000, when I collected the 500cm, 50/4 C black lens, 80/2.8 CF, and 180/4 CF. I remember taking it to shoot the scenery of Kinmen. This set of Hasselblad focuses on the Carl Zeiss C white lenses from the same period as the 500c, which should have some differences in coating technology compared to the later red T C black lenses and red T* CF black lenses.

The shooting location this time is the popular wedding photography holy ground in Taipei - the Taipei Water Museum. The black and white film used is ILFORD HP5 PLUS 400, scanned with an EPSON V750PRO scanner. Actually, I've never been able to handle scanning well, but at least it's better than the digital files scanned by general stores.

"During the Japanese colonial period in the 40th year of the Meiji era (1907), the Governor-General's Office invited William K. Burton, a British consultant for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Japan at the time, to assist in sanitary engineering in Taiwan. This included water source surveys. Following Mr. Burton's advice, a water intake was built by the Xindian River at the foot of Mount Xia Guanyin, with the aim of taking raw water. A water treatment plant was established at the foothills, treating the water before pumping it to a reservoir on the mountainside. By gravity, the treated water naturally flowed down to supply daily water to residents.

In the 41st year of the Meiji era (1908), the water intake and pumping station buildings and equipment were completed. In the 42nd year of the Meiji era (1909), the water supply pipelines, water treatment plant, and reservoir were fully completed. The water treatment plant began supplying water, with an output of 20,000 tons. The first phase aimed to supply water to 120,000 people and was named the Taipei Water Source Slow Filtration Plant. From then on, Taipei's water supply entered the era of modernization.

Hasselblad 500c, Pinhole Lens ^_^ My First Time Pinhole Photography

I've had this "pinhole lens cap" from Rising for quite a while now, but I never had the chance to take it out for a test shoot. Taking advantage of a day off, I decided to bring it out to soak up some sun and experience pinhole photography. In addition to the camera and pinhole lens cap, a tripod and a cable release are essential tools for pinhole photography.

Mounted on the Hasselblad 500c with the "pinhole lens cap."
Hasselblad 500c

Specifications of the "pinhole lens cap":
f185 (for convenience, using f192 for metering)
Angle of view: 62 degrees (it is recommended to frame using the 80mm standard lens)

Setting up the tripod in the center of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall square, I used the wider-angle lens Carl Zeiss Distagon 4/50 C to frame the shot. First, I took a photo with the optical lens for comparison, also to set the aperture and shutter values. At the moment, at f192, it required approximately 10 seconds of exposure.

This is the image taken with the Carl Zeiss Distagon 4/50 C wide-angle lens.

Next, I switched to the "pinhole lens cap." At this point, the tripod became crucial. Changing lenses requires avoiding any movement of the camera and tripod. If accidentally moved, it's advisable to reconfirm the framing, as film and developing in the digital age can be quite expensive. Once the "pinhole lens cap" was securely installed, I pressed the cable release and counted silently to 10. 1, 2, 3,... 10. Done. Around 3:00 PM, there were inevitably people moving about in the square, so the blurred figures were expected.

Is this what pinhole imaging looks like?

After developing the film, I measured the proportions of the images. It would have been a more accurate choice to use the Carl Zeiss Planar 2.8/80 C for framing, as several photos captured buildings that were too large due to the wide-angle lens, resulting in them being cut off in the pinhole images. The main subjects became incomplete, which can be considered a case of failed work.

Hasselblad 500c + Polaroid Magazine 100, Instant Film

2013.5.5

Today is the second time I'm using Fuji's instant peel-apart film. The first time was with the FP-3000b black and white instant peel-apart film, and I didn't keep records then, only a few captured photos. The feeling at that time was that the accuracy of metering was as crucial as with positive film; precise control was needed to capture the desired atmosphere.

Let me introduce the equipment I'm using: Hasselblad 500c + Polaroid Magazine 100. Traditionally, medium-format cameras with interchangeable film backs in the 90s had original or third-party instant peel-apart film backs. In the era of traditional film photography, to confirm aperture, shutter speed, and lighting (flash) effects during shooting, professional photographers often took instant photos to adjust photographic parameters. This practice is considered outdated in the digital photography era. Many enthusiasts of medium and large-format film cameras have switched to digital cameras to achieve the same purpose.

Hasselblad 500c, Carl Zeisss Planar 2.8/80, Polariod Magazine 100

The Polaroid Magazine 100 can use two types of film: Fuji FP-100c (color ISO100) and FP-3000b (black and white ISO3200). The film size is 3.2" x 4.2", resulting in images with a 0.2" wide white border. As Hasselblad's film imaging size is 2.2" x 2.2", the captured result will only cover a part of the entire film, and the unexposed parts will appear black.

Fujifilm FP-100c instant photo

After developing the instant peel-apart film, there's a chance to obtain a negative like the one below. This negative is the black film originally attached to the instant film. The black part can be washed away with a bleaching solution, revealing a film similar to a negative. The side with the black coating is smooth, while the side attached to the instant film has an imaging layer.

Fujifilm FP-100c instant film negative

Scanning the mentioned instant film negative requires a flatbed scanner with an appropriate light hood due to the large film size. Using a regular negative scanning mode, the negative image can be converted to a positive one. I didn't spend time adjusting colors, and the result has a distinctive LOMO atmosphere, which I find even more appealing.

Hasselblad 500C + Carl Zeiss Planar 2.8/80 @ Heping East Road Sec. 2

2009.11.19

I live on Heping East Road Sec. 2, and it is also a place where I often test cameras. This time, I photographed road signs and traffic lights, which are facilities that we take for granted but are quite important. Road signs and traffic lights are usually made with bright RGB primary colors, but when photographed with black-and-white film, they are almost all the same gray tone, making it difficult to distinguish between RGB. I thought of photographing road signs and traffic lights one morning when I saw students from Longmen Junior High School led by their teacher explaining the functions of various traffic lights around the school. I found it very interesting and decided to create a photo album for these easily overlooked signs.

The king of 120-format film SLR cameras is undoubtedly Hasselblad. In the era of digital camera popularity, the cost of owning a Hasselblad camera is about half of what it was 10 years ago (not considering inflation). This combination includes: Body: 500c, Waist-level viewfinder, 120 back, Carl Zeiss Planar 80/2.8 white lens. The camera was manufactured by Victor Hasselblad of Sweden between 1965 and 1975, and the lens was manufactured by Carl Zeiss of West Germany. It is almost 50 years old now. The price is higher on auction sites in Taiwan, while the price on eBay is relatively more affordable. The downside is that you cannot arrange to see the camera in person. If you are interested, you can compare the two.
