I was surprised to stumble upon a Yashica Electro 35 AF-mini autofocus point-and-shoot camera on a shopping website. I had always thought that Yashica’s Electro 35 series came to an end in the 1980s with the advent of autofocus cameras. Unexpectedly, after Kyocera took over, they brought back this historically significant and classic name for a mass-market, fully automatic compact camera. Since the camera body didn’t indicate the lens specifications, I looked it up online — it has a 34mm focal length and an f/4.5 aperture, which were pretty standard specs for consumer-grade cameras of that era (similar to those from Konica, Nikon, etc.).
Recently, traditional film cameras have become trendy among young people. My daughter jumped on the bandwagon and asked if I had a suitable camera she could try out. I handed her the Yashica Electro 35 AF-mini that I had acquired some time ago, loaded it with Kodak ISO 400 film, and it ended up accompanying her on trips to Chiayi and Kyoto, Japan. She came back with some pretty nice travel photos (nowadays, we scan the film and upload digital files). Back in the days when this camera was new, film only cost about a quarter of what it does now. Thinking back, I’m grateful I got to experience that golden era of traveling abroad with a dozen rolls of film and coming home with so many tangible memories
